President Donald Trump and his former “special government employee,” Elon Musk, broke out into open hostility last week, especially trading barbs throughout the day on Thursday. By the end of the day, Musk had accused Trump of complicity in Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes, while Trump was threatening to pull Musk’s government contracts.
In addition to concerns among Republicans that Musk will no longer fund Them and possibly even back primary challengers, the worry has been whether the GOP base might split.
According to a new poll, most Republicans seem to agree with the president.

A YouGov poll, as cited by Axios, asks Americans who they would side with between Trump and Musk. Among the overall population, 28 percent chose Trump, 8 percent selected Musk, and a majority (52 percent) said “neither.”
However, among Republicans, 71 percent chose Trump, while 12 percent said they were undecided.
Trump had more to say about Musk in an interview over the weekend with NBC News. He threatened “serious consequences” if Musk supports Democratic candidates.
“If he does, he’ll have to pay the consequences for that,” Trump told NBC News in the weekend interview. He also confirmed that he believes his relationship with Musk is probably over.
“I’m too busy doing other things,” he said, adding, “I have no intention of speaking to him.”
This is literally using the threat of government intervention for strictly political purposes. https://t.co/gD8bPVsHYV

Trump also addressed Musk’s implication that the president is included on the “Epstein list.”
“That’s called ‘old news,’ that’s been old news, that has been talked about for years,” Trump said in the NBC interview. “Even Epstein’s lawyer said I had nothing to do with it. It’s old news.”
The president had previously announced, through the White House, that he planned to sell or give away the red Tesla car that he announced he was purchasing back in the spring, on the day he hosted Musk and a phalanx of Tesla cars at the White House. Trump, who is forbidden from driving by Secret Service regulations, is not believed to have ever driven the car, which was kept on the White House grounds for staff use.
Meanwhile, according to a Washington Post feature about the Trump/Musk breakup, the president has opined privately that he thinks Musk is a “a big-time drug addict.”
