Has Donald Trump’s base finally deserted him? There are indications of that from the latest polling.
Per The Daily Beast, a new AP NORC poll has found “mounting dissatisfaction within the base over the president’s handling of the federal government amid what became the longest shutdown on record.”
Republican support for the president’s management of the government has fallen from 81 percent in March to just 68 percent this month, a drop of 13 points. The same is true of independents’ support for the president on that question, which has dropped from 38 to 25 percent in that same eight-month time frame.
The dam is finally cracking as Republican voters awaken to Trump’s profound incompetence, his shutdown folly and Epstein scandal coalescing into an unmistakable portrait of a failing regime.https://t.co/S7oWXTZcn8

The results come after a government shutdown that was widely seen as being resolved on terms close to what Trump’s side wanted.
“The poll’s timing is salient,” The Daily Beast said. “Trump and his allies have sought to firmly blame their opponents across the aisle for the six-week shutdown—the longest in U.S. history. It is estimated to have cost the U.S. economy up to $14 billion for each week it has lasted so far.”
The poll was also likely released too early to have been impacted by the new revelations involving Jeffrey Epstein.
“The survey by AP-NORC Center for Public Affairs also found the president’s overall approval ratings now stand at just 36 percent, only two points above the lowest ever score, recorded in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 Capitol riot, which Trump was later accused and acquitted of instigating,” The Beast reported.
