A shocking video has surfaced online, showing the final moments of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, before he was fatally shot outside the New York Hilton Midtown. The footage, which was shared widely on social media, has intensified discussions surrounding both the circumstances of Thompson’s death and UnitedHealthcare’s controversial policies.
The video is given some context via Collin Rugg, showing a chilling sequence of events:
JUST IN: Video footage released of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson being executed by a masked gunman. Video footage shows a man in the grey backpack pulling out a pistol with a silencer on it before opening fire. The man was seen firing multiple shots at Thompson who stumbled to the ground. According to The New York Post, the weapon jammed at one point, prompting the gunman to fix it so he could keep firing. He then fled down an alley and was last seen in Central Park.

Brian Krassenstein shared this purporting it to be the killer (we don’t know that for a fact right now):

Investigations and Potential Motives
The NYPD has described the attack as a “targeted hit” and launched a manhunt for the suspect. According to a CNN report, investigators are exploring several motives, including business disputes or grievances related to UnitedHealthcare’s policies.
CNN wrote:
Shortly before 7 a.m., a gunman, masked in the freezing temperatures, “was lying in wait” before opening fire on Thompson, according to NYPD commissioner Jessica Tisch.
“Many people passed the suspect, but he appeared to wait for his intended target,” she said. “I want to be clear: At this time, every indication is that this was a premeditated, preplanned, targeted attack.”
The gunman approached Thompson from behind and shot him at least once in the back and once in the right calf, Tisch said. Responding emergency workers took Thompson to Mount Sinai West in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead at 7:12 a.m.
Thompson, 50, was in New York City for an Investor Day conference. He had served as CEO of UnitedHealthcare since 2021, overseeing the company during a period of significant growth but also substantial criticism.
Here’s video of police at the scene of the crime:

Was he about to take a plea deal and reveal all about congressional favors that gained them their monopoly?

Social Media Reactions to the Video
Social media erupted with discussions following the release of the video. There’s simply no love lost for insurance executives especially when this has been their experience. As shown by this chart – United Healthcare is made up of some real bastards.
Could very well be someone in or former military who’s family member did not get an approved surgery/treatment. United Health has one of the highest claims denials in the industry. They didn’t generate $379.5 billion in revenue in 2024 for nothing. https://t.co/j23NoJB5X3 pic.twitter.com/wQvvPQ6NVg

He was a human being and no person should ever be assassinated, but that doesn’t mean people will care either. Here’s how everyday Americans felt about the murder as pointed out by this Twitter user.
The worst part is – they’re not wrong. Murder is wrong, but many people die due to insurance companies prioritizing profits over their customers’ lives. Karma’s a bitch y’all.
The Manhunt Is On
This user actually thinks he found the direction the killer went on a Citibike. It’s important to note that all of this is in real time and is subject to change rapidly. He wrote:
I am fairly confident of where the United Healthcare assassin escaped to. He escaped on an electric Citibike, according to police.
I happen to continuously scrape Citibike data every minute, so I can see where individual bikes go.
The only northbound Citibike to leave within…

Whether that’s true or false – it’s fascinating that this information is available. He says he shared it with the police.
Broader Implications
Thompson’s murder comes amid growing frustration with the healthcare system. While it remains unclear whether the assailant’s motive was directly related to UnitedHealthcare’s practices, the incident has reignited public outrage over corporate accountability.
The Department of Justice has an active investigation into United Healthcare which you can read about HERE; they wrote:
“Millions of patients depend on United and Amedisys to receive home health and hospice care in the comfort of their homes,” said Principal Deputy Associate Attorney General Benjamin C. Mizer. “The Department’s lawsuit demonstrates our commitment to ensuring that consolidation does not threaten quality, affordability, or wages in these vital healthcare markets. I commend the staff of the Antitrust Division for their extraordinary work on this matter.”
“American healthcare is unwell. Unless this $3.3 billion transaction is stopped, UnitedHealth Group will further extend its grip to home health and hospice care, threatening seniors, their families and nurses,” said Assistant Attorney General Jonathan Kanter of the Justice Department’s Antitrust Division. “I want to thank my colleagues at the Antitrust Division for their tireless efforts to fight on behalf of Americans for a competitive economy.”
What we do know is he’s dead, the man who killed him is on the loose and lots of United Healthcare customers seem to feel indifferent about it due to that company’s reputation of unethical behavior. We’ll see how this plays out. He was a human and we wish only the best for his family.
