Donald Trump wants the Nobel Peace Prize more than anything else. He repeats it over and over. He says he should already have it. He wants history to see him as a great peacemaker. He wants his name written next to Nelson Mandela and Jimmy Carter. But the prize is still far away.
Trump thought Russia and Ukraine could give him that chance. He staged a red carpet summit in Alaska with Vladimir Putin. He said it was the start of a new path to peace and that only he could stop the war. Cameras flashed, flags waved, and the stage looked historic. But behind the images, there was little substance.
Only days later, the plan fell apart. Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov announced there was no agenda for talks with Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky. He accused Ukraine of refusing dialogue. Zelensky quickly answered, blaming Russia for blocking peace and escalating the fight. At the same time, Russian drones and missiles struck Ukrainian cities, hitting a U.S. electronics plant. The war was not slowing down. It was getting worse.
This is the Trump pattern. He makes grand claims, then the results crumble. He once bragged about stopping India and Pakistan from going to nuclear war, but India denied it ever happened. His fans point to the Abraham Accords, yet those were already in motion before him and never solved the deeper issues.

But peace cannot be staged with photo ops. Putin is demanding that Ukraine give up Donbas, drop its NATO ambitions, and accept permanent neutrality. Zelensky has made it clear that Ukraine will not “gift” territory to Russia. The divide is too large to be bridged by a single handshake or a Trump press event.
Still, Trump keeps talking as if peace is within reach. He even announced a deadline, saying Putin had until August 8 to accept a deal. Then he quietly walked it back. It became clear the move was more about optics than outcomes. European leaders have warned that any agreement on Putin’s terms would only reward aggression and invite more war in the future. Trump’s timeline for peace has already been broken by harsh reality.
And then came a rumor that cuts even deeper for him. Rumors about the Nobel Peace Prize are now circling around someone else — California Governor Gavin Newsom.
Rep. Eric Swalwell, a Democrat from California, fueled the talk with a sharp message online. “I just talked to some friends in Norway, where the Nobel Prize is awarded. They’re saying ‘Nobel Newsom’ is all the buzz. Pack your bags, @GavinNewsom, you’re going to Oslo!”

That line was crafted to sting. Trump is obsessed with the Nobel. The idea that a Democrat could even be mentioned as a candidate is the kind of jab that would burn him the most.
