Not Exactly “Silent Night”: Trump Brings Politics Into Holiday Calls With Children

Unexpected holiday rants

According to reports, President Trump took part in NORAD’s annual Santa tracking calls, speaking with children while sharing some unusual political commentary.

NORAD, a joint U.S.-Canadian initiative, normally monitors airspace for threats. But every Christmas, it tracks Santa’s journey across the globe. Families can watch his progress mile by mile on the NORAD Santa Tracker website.

This year, Trump and Melania answered calls from children, discussing Santa’s trip and, at times, politics. One child was told, “Pennsylvania is great, we won Pennsylvania, actually, three times. We won it a landslide.”

In another conversation, Trump remarked, “We track Santa. We want to ensure that Santa is behaving. We want to make sure that he’s not infiltrated, that we’re not infiltrating into our country a bad Santa. Santa loves Oklahoma like I do. You know, Oklahoma was very good to me in the election.”

Social media users quickly reacted to the unusual statements.

Santa, of course, began his journey from the North Pole, where he lives with Mrs. Claus and his elves, who manufacture toys and care for the reindeer year-round.

NORAD explained, “Each year on December 24th, Santa and his reindeer launch from the North Pole very early in the morning for their famous trip around the world. The minute they launch, NORAD starts to track him!”

His first stop this year is the Republic of Kiribati, a collection of islands in the South Pacific. From there, he travels westward, delivering gifts to children in New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Asia, Africa, Western Europe, Canada, the U.S., Mexico, and Central and South America.

This isn’t the first time Trump and Melania joined NORAD calls. In 2018, they also fielded calls from children, with Trump catching attention by asking a seven-year-old about her Santa beliefs, saying, “At seven, it’s marginal right?”
