There was an interesting little omission at the White House on Thursday, and Donald Trump might not be thrilled about it.
Melania Trump stood before an audience to discuss a ceasefire in Ukraine, thanked Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky for their cooperation, and somehow managed to leave her husband out of the whole speech.
The first lady was hosting Russian and Ukrainian representatives to mark a six-day humanitarian ceasefire in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city in Ukraine’s Kherson region. The temporary pause allowed aid deliveries into the area and gave nearly 800 people a chance to leave. It ended on November 1.
Melania used the occasion to explain just how involved she had been in getting the agreement across the finish line. She told the audience she first learned about the crisis in September and instructed her representative, Marc Beckman, to contact officials in both countries.

According to Melania, Russia and Ukraine agreed to work with her as an “exclusive intermediary” after previous efforts to secure a ceasefire had failed. She said she was involved in everything from reviewing mine plans and aerial images to assessing roads and discussing evacuation routes.
“My communication with Russia and Ukraine was extensive, professional, detailed and highly cooperative,” she told the gathering.
She also praised both sides for reaching an agreement, describing it as a “sophisticated ceasefire.” But the most interesting part of her speech arrived near the end, when she gave credit to the two presidents.
“The ceasefire in Oleshky would not be possible without President Putin and President Zelenskyy,” Melania said. “Their cooperation establishes a meaningful precedent for advancing peace throughout the region.”
First Lady Melania Trump gathered leaders from Russia and Ukraine at the White House today. The occasion is believed to mark the first time in American history that a First Lady has personally brought representatives of two nations actively at war together to the White House for diplomacy.
“Let us see Oleshky as a spark in a world of darkness, capable of illuminating the best in humanity. Build a powerful flame of peace, visible to the world. Ignite hope, foster cooperation, and brighten a path toward lasting peace.”

There was no similar acknowledgement of Donald Trump in her own remarks, despite his repeated promises to bring Russia’s war against Ukraine to an end.
The Russian delegation, however, did not leave the president completely out of the conversation. Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev praised Melania for her “distinguished humanitarian role” and said Putin had personally given instructions to make the local ceasefire happen.
He also managed to squeeze in a compliment for the American president, saying Putin “appreciates President Trump’s peacemaking effort” and his team’s work on a peace plan.
That was more recognition than Melania had offered her husband during her speech.
The Ukrainian delegation was just as generous with its praise for the first lady. David Arakhamia, head of President Zelensky’s parliamentary faction, told her: “You did an amazing job.”
He even described how opinions about the operation had changed, saying that at the beginning, “we had about 5 percent people who believed in success and 95 percent of skeptics.” After the ceasefire was implemented, he said, those figures had effectively reversed.
