White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has a 10-month-old baby son, and on Thursday, a fellow White House communications staffer posted a photo of Leavitt working at her desk while feeding her son from a bottle.
Margo Martin’s official X account posted the photo. Martin is a Special Assistant to the President and Communications Advisor in the White House. The caption read, “Walked in to @PressSec typing with one hand and feeding her son with the other. Super Mom!”

Both parties have had numerous staffers with small children while working in the White House. But the picture set off some complex reactions about women in the workplace, especially at a time when a growing strain of right-wing thought seems opposed to the idea of women having jobs outside the home at all.
Why doesn’t @karolineleavit’s 60-year-old husband take care of the baby? https://t.co/mKviahRLBv

MAGA celebrating the press secretary having more privilege than any other mom in federal service. The single GS-7 at the VA cafeteria isn’t bringing her baby to work. https://t.co/Yv350JH8TR

Using your kid as a prop will never not be weird. I feel sorry for that child growing up around pure hatred…
Also.. 99% of the country doesn’t have the ability to bring their kid into work and if they did Republicans would shame them for it. https://t.co/LeRU9wMmqj

Some also noted that Congress recently cracked down on proxy voting, meaning that Rep. Brittany Pettersen (D-CO) recently had to bring her newborn son with her to cast a crucial vote on the House floor.
“Unfortunately, I wasn’t given the opportunity to vote remotely after giving birth, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me from representing my constituents,” Petterson said at the time.
The same people I see praising Karoline Leavitt for this are the same ones slamming Brittany Pettersen for being a working mom in Congress.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt brought her baby to the Oval Office, humanizing children in front of the most powerful people in the world…
Remember Rep. Brittany Pettersen co-sponsored the proxy voting resolution… child rearing doesn’t seem to get in the way Karoline… pic.twitter.com/6TC3lkRxuQ— Observing Consciousness (@holonabove) May 2, 2025
