So much for priorities

President Donald Trump threw a Halloween party at the White House Thursday night that had everything from superheroes and ballerinas to a few mini-Trumps and mini-Melania lookalikes.

Trump and First Lady Melania arrived on the South Lawn as night fell. An orchestral version of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” set the scene. Neither was in costume. Trump wore a blue suit, red tie, and a red “USA” cap. Melania stayed elegant in a brown coat over an orange dress.

The couple handed out full-sized Hershey bars and Twizzlers in boxes stamped with the presidential seal. Trump commented on the crowd of children and parents waiting down the driveway: “It’s a long line. It’s almost as big as the ballroom.”

The ballroom, of course, is under construction. Temporary walls hid most of the work, though a bulldozer loomed like a silent guest in the background.

The party went on despite Trump returning hours earlier from a six-day trip to Asia, visiting Malaysia, Japan, and South Korea. All of this happened while the government is in its 30th day of shutdown.

Trump has called for reopening the government, but Democrats insist on extending expiring tax credits that help millions afford health insurance. Republicans say they won’t negotiate until the government reopens.

Even tariffs on Chinese imports made costumes harder to find and more expensive. Still, the White House lawn looked festive, with carved pumpkins, bright mums, and autumn leaves decorating the space.

Children attending were dressed as Spider-Man, Captain America, ballerinas, princesses, leprechauns, and more. Some tried to mimic the first couple. Two boys wore suits and Trump hats, grinning like the president, while a girl wore a white coat like Melania. Parents, not wanting to be left out, sported “USA” caps.

The event sparked social media reactions. PatriotTakes posted: “Dancers surrounding Trump’s table at his Halloween party. Marco Rubio and his wife were also at the table.” Another post simply read: “An entertainer at Trump’s Halloween party,” showing one of the performers.

Not everyone was impressed.

Even more extreme commentary appeared, including jokes like, “Looks like an Epstein party.”
