On Thursday morning, Kristi Noem became the first cabinet secretary to be fired in the second Trump era, when Trump announced that she had been removed, to be replaced by Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma.

The timing was especially embarrassing for the former South Dakota governor.

Per The Daily Mail, Noem was on stage giving a speech, touting Trump’s agenda, at the time the news broke that she had been removed.

“Kristi Noem was mid-sentence praising Donald Trump‘s border triumphs before a packed law enforcement conference in Nashville when the news flashed across the country Thursday: the President had just fired her, making her the first cabinet casualty of his second term,” The Mail reported. Noem was addressing the Sergeant Benevolent Association Major Cities Conference.

“She spoke in glowing terms about the Trump agenda as she fielded questions from an audience apparently unaware she had minutes earlier been shown the door,” the Daily Mail reported.

“Noem faced a drubbing before the Senate and House Judiciary Committee’s on Tuesday and Wednesday where she was confronted by Republicans over the deadly immigration crackdown in Minneapolis, lavish spending, and her alleged affair with her aide Corey Lewandowski,” the Mail said.

It recalled the moment in 2017, during Trump’s first term, when he fired James Comey as FBI director, announcing the dismissal while Comey, too, was giving a speech. Comey was speaking to FBI employees in Los Angeles when news broke that he was out.

Trump announced on Truth Social Thursday morning that Mullin would be the next DHS secretary, while Noem was being shuffled off to the newly created position of “Special Envoy for the Shield of the Americas.”

“Kristi Noem, who has served us well, and has had numerous and spectacular results (especially on the Border!), will be moving to be Special Envoy for The Shield of the Americas, our new Security Initiative in the Western Hemisphere we are announcing on Saturday in Doral, Florida. I thank Kristi for her service at “Homeland,” Trump announced in the post.
