However, Obama’s more significant concern was that fundamental American rights were being attacked.
“I’m more deeply concerned with a federal government that threatens universities if they don’t give up students who are exercising their right to free speech,” Obama warned. That’s terrifying. College kids are out here holding signs, and the government wants names? This isn’t normal. This isn’t democracy. This is fear.
Trump also struck a deal with the law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher—where Kamala Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, works—forcing them to provide $100 million in free legal work.
“The rule of law is under attack. Democracy is under attack. And so, all of us lawyers need to do what we can to push back on that,” Emhoff said. And he’s not exaggerating.
Kamala Harris also spoke on this. In a video from the Leading Women Defined Summit, Harris said, “There were many things we knew would happen.” Then she smiled and added, “I’m not here to say I told you so,” before letting out a laugh.
She’s right. Organizations are staying quiet. People are scared. But Harris reminded everyone, “Courage is also contagious.” And that part hit deep because we need it.
Obama isn’t just taking shots at Trump; he’s sounding the alarm. What’s happening now isn’t normal. It’s not just Trump being “goofy,” like Obama once joked. It’s dangerous. And people need to stop pretending everything’s okay.
