Pressure Builds On JD Vance As Calls For Drastic Action Against Trump Grow

A writer called for the vice president to invoke the 25th Amendment.

Vice President JD Vance, it would appear, is highly unlikely to pursue a 25th Amendment push to remove Donald Trump from office and assume the presidency himself. But one writer is asking for him to do so.

Scott McConnell is the founder of The American Conservative, a magazine associated with the paleoconservative, Pat Buchanan-style wing of the conservative movement; Buchanan himself was associated with the magazine at one point. TAC has sometimes been aligned with Donald Trump, especially in opposition to immigration, and sometimes not, such as the current military campaign in Iran.

“My advice to Vance,” McConnell said on X on Sunday, “Announce your support of 25th amendment transition. Say Chris Murphy or similar will be veep. Announce you will NOT be a candidate in 2028. Use your position, access to the media to explain why this is necessary. Don’t resign.”

Various reports, including one by Politico, have indicated that Vance was a dissenting voice inside the White House, expressing skepticism about the Iran operation. However, there’s little indication that he’s planning a move against the president, especially one that would cut off any possibility that he could become Trump’s successor- especially not one that would install a Democrat as vice president.

McConnell’s proposal, far-fetched as it is, gained some attention, even from at least one member of Congress:

And Trump ultra-loyalist Laura Loomer:

At any rate, while Trump’s first vice president once stepped up and did the right thing, there’s little reason to think his second one will do anything similar.
