Priorities feel misplaced

Late Monday, as strikes intensified in Iran and the reported death toll climbed toward 800, President Trump was posting about Melania.

The war he launched had entered its third day.

At least six U.S. servicemembers were killed in Kuwait after a strike hit a makeshift operations center. Retaliatory attacks were unfolding across the region. Americans in affected areas were scrambling for safety.

During those hours, Trump shared a montage from 2004 showing him and Melania during their engagement, including their appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. In the clip, Melania said the best thing about Trump was that “he’s a loyal man.” When asked about his worst trait, she did not give one.

In another clip included in the edit, Trump said, “Is this the greatest first lady? People love our first lady.”

The posting continued into the early hours of Tuesday. He shared coverage of Melania presiding over a United Nations Security Council meeting, becoming the first presidential spouse to do so.

He also posted an article highlighting her Dior suit at the UN.

At the Security Council meeting, Melania focused on children affected by conflict. “When conflicts erupt, children are among those most severely affected,” she said. “We have been reminded of this truth over the last two days.” She added, “Their bravery and dedication will always be remembered.”

Trump also shifted focus to elections, writing:

Back in Washington, Trump had earlier spoken at a Medal of Honor ceremony where he drifted into remarks about construction noise at the White House. “When you hear all the hammering out there, you know why the first lady is not thrilled exactly,” he said. “She said, ‘Will the pile drivers ever stop?’ You know they go from six in the morning until 11:30 in the evening. Can you imagine?”
