Ninety-five days is a long stretch to go without being seen, especially for someone whose job technically requires showing up to work.
That’s how long Mitch McConnell has gone without a single public sighting, and Monday’s footage only deepened the mystery.
Conservative journalist Nick Sortor filmed Capitol Police surrounding the senator’s D.C. home while the chamber convened without him. “Capitol Police encircle Mitch McConnell’s house while he’s still nowhere to be found,” he wrote, adding, “The fact our senators have so much contempt for us that we’re not even allowed to know if they’re alive is insane.”

Security around the property has only intensified as the weeks stack up.
One outlet reported the home remains “under heavy guard by an extensive security detail,” describing unmarked SUVs parked along the curb and marked patrol cars posted at either end of the block, with curtains drawn across nearly every window in the house. The last confirmed photo of McConnell dates back to late July, bearing what reporters called “a striking resemblance” to one released two weeks earlier.
Follow the money, and a clearer picture starts to emerge. The Daily Beast reported that McConnell “made $43,500 in taxpayer-funded paychecks during his 92-day absence from the halls of Congress.” His office didn’t skip a beat either, according to the same report, which found that “the Kentucky senator’s six highest-paid staffers earned a combined $318,688 pre-tax” over that same stretch, with the full roughly 40-person office bringing in close to $894,000 total.
Nobody in that office has offered much beyond silence dressed up as process. Chief of Staff Terry Carmack, described by the Beast as “camera-shy,” earns $226,000 a year and has kept himself almost entirely out of frame. Communications Director Stephanie Penn, at roughly $214,000 annually, has “presided over this PR disaster,” in the outlet’s words, without supplying much resembling a real update.
Health history offers a partial frame for all this, even if it doesn’t close the gap completely.
CNN reported that McConnell, “a childhood polio survivor, has faced a series of health issues in recent years, including multiple falls.” Congress’s attending physician addressed one such incident in 2023, describing the resulting injuries as “minor” and noting that McConnell “has experienced several falls throughout the year that have been attributed to his post-polio condition.”
