Republican members of Congress keep trying to one-up each other in their sycophancy towards Donald Trump, up to and including multiple Congressmen nominating Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

This week, something possibly even weirder happened: One Congressman announced an amendment that would name a section of the Kennedy Center after First Lady Melania Trump.

Per The Daily Beast, Rep. Mike Simpson (R-ID) introduced the amendment that would rename the Kennedy Center’s Opera House after Melania Trump. It’s attached to the FY2026 budget for the Interior Department.

“First Lady Melania Trump serves as the Honorary Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Kennedy Center. Naming a theater after her is an excellent way to recognize her appreciation for the arts,” the Congressman said in a statement to the publication.

“As Chairman of the House Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Subcommittee—which oversees federal funding for capital repairs and operations and maintenance at the Kennedy Center—I am proud to honor her support and commitment in promoting the arts and humanities.”

Attempting a takeover of the Kennedy Center was one Trump’s first acts in his second term, which included firing members of the board. He also named longtime loyalist Richard Grenell the Center’s new president. He also added other loyalists to the board, including a pair of Fox News hosts, while also hanging portraits of himself, Melania, and Vice President JD Vance and his wife to the Center.

It follows an attempt, the outlet reported, to name the Washington-era Dulles Airport after the president, along with other similar symbolic actions this year.

Per the report, Democrats “blasted” the proposal, especially following GOP actions this year to cut funding for the arts, including the National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, and even the Kennedy Center’s own budget.

The story added that in the center’s history, neither the Eisenhower Theater, Opera House, or Concert Hall has ever been renamed.
