President Donald Trump was handed a defeat on Tuesday when a redistricting measure meant to pass a Democratic-friendly map in Virginia passed.

Per The Daily Beast, “the projection was made with 82 percent of the votes counted. 50.3 percent voted yes to redistricting, while 49.7 percent voted no.” The referendum followed an earlier effort, by the pro-Trump side, to pass Republican-friendly redistricting maps in several red states.

“The results of the referendum were a direct rebuke of President Donald Trump, who has been urging Republican-led states to redraw their congressional maps to favor GOP candidates, but Democrats furiously scrambled to redraw districts in Democrat-led states in response,” the Beast said. The new maps, the report said, could enable Democrats to pick up as many as four additional seats in the Old Dominion state in November’s midterm elections.

And then, naturally, Trump claimed that the vote had been “rigged.”

“A RIGGED ELECTION TOOK PLACE LAST NIGHT IN THE GREAT COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA!,” the president claimed on Truth Social. There is no evidence of anything untoward during the election.

“All day long Republicans were winning, the Spirit was unbelievable, until the very end when, of course, there was a massive ‘Mail In Ballot Drop!’ Where have I heard that before — And the Democrats eked out another Crooked Victory! Six to five goes to ten to one, and yet the Presidential Election in November was very close to a 50-50 split,” he said.

“In addition to everything else, the language on the Referendum was purposefully unintelligible and deceptive,” Trump added in the Truth Social post. “As everyone knows, I am an extraordinarily brilliant person, and even I had no idea what the hell they were talking about in the Referendum, and neither do they! Let’s see if the Courts will fix this travesty of ‘Justice.'”
Per The Hill, Trump’s political director, James Blair appeared on CNN after the result and tried to spin it, without claiming the election had been rigged.
“This is a state in November of 2025 that went by 15 points to the Democrats for governor and about 8 points for attorney general. Last night, this was a 3-point race. That’s actually a 3-point overperformance of the Trump 2024 historic performance in Virginia,” Blair told CNN.
