Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election was one of the biggest continuing stories of the Trump presidency. The special counsel’s nearly two-year probe led to the indictments and convictions of several people in Trump’s orbit, established that Russia had interfered in the election, and “identified numerous links between the Russian government and the Trump campaign.” However, the probe did not lead to any criminal charges for Trump himself, or to an impeachment.
Throughout the process, Mueller did not speak to the press and was known for keeping leaks to a minimum, and when he testified before Congress after the process was over, he revealed little new information. But now, more than five years after the release of the Mueller Report, the former special counsel has spoken out in the forward of a book.

In the preface, Mueller writes that he has been persuaded that “there is value in identifying lessons learned from the decisions we made and how we made them, mistakes and all.”
“Americans have not learned the lessons of Russia’s attack on our democracy in 2016,” Mueller writes in the preface, in what is more a reference to Russia’s intentions and capabilities than a shot at Trump himself. “This threat deserves the attention of every American. Russia attacked us before and will do so again.”

Two other books, Where Law Ends by Andrew Weissmann and Compromised by former FBI special agent Peter Strzok, were published in past years by former top staffers in the Mueller probe.
The book also looks into the revelation from this summer about the Mueller investigation looking into a potential bribe attempt from Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in 2016. The Mueller probe had looked into the allegation and referred it to the Justice Department, where it “died after sustained pressure from Attorney General William Barr.” This investigation stayed a secret until this summer, when the Washington Post revealed it.
