After Elon Musk spent the first two months of Donald Trump’s presidency as, effectively, the co-president, Trump and Musk had a predictable falling out in the spring, which culminated in Musk posting to X in July that Trump is in the Epstein files, with Trump later threatening to retaliate against Musk’s companies. Musk later mused about creating a new political party, called “The America Party,” although there’s been little movement on that in the months since. Nor did Trump ever follow through on any threat to hurt Musk’s businesses.

On July 1, Charlie Kirk had declared on his show that he expected that Trump and Musk would eventually reconcile. On Sunday, at Kirk’s football stadium memorial service, the two were seen together for the first time in months.

According to the New York Times, “the televised moment occurred just as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth was about to speak onstage. Mr. Musk approached the president and slid into an empty seat beside him. Each extended a hand, and then the two began chatting animatedly.”

Musk went on to post a photo, albeit a blurry one, of himself with Trump, with the caption “for Charlie.”

“Time to drop the really big bomb,” Musk posted to X on June 5. “[Donald Trump] is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public.” Musk later deleted the post. However, the post is almost certainly true.

The. New York Times reported this summer that Attorney General Pam Bondi has informed Trump that his name indeed appears in the Epstein files. This does not necessarily mean that the files contain evidence of any wrongdoing on Trump’s part, but merely that Trump’s name is mentioned in Epstein-related documents in some context. And it is almost certain that Musk was correct that Trump is eager to avoid the embarrassment that would come with the public release of such documents.
