It has been 25 years since the September 11 attacks, and Friday’s anniversary was marked with ceremonies in New York, at the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

This year, however, the locations of key figures stood out. Donald Trump attended the Pentagon ceremony rather than the traditional gathering at Ground Zero in New York, a noticeable shift from how he has marked the day in the past.

Vice President JD Vance represented the administration in New York instead, where four former presidents, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden, stood alongside their wives in a rare show of unity.

Official statements followed the expected tone of remembrance. The White House issued a proclamation noting that “the peace of our nation was shattered by terrorists” 25 years ago and ordered flags flown at half-staff to honor the 2,977 lives lost. Bill Clinton released his own message, writing that “what we have in common is far more important than what divides us.”

Barack and Michelle Obama also shared a joint post, reflecting on “the shock of that beautiful, cloudless morning” and the memories still carried by those who lived through it.

It was right about then that things picked up online, as a side by side photo posted on X by user Marlene Robertson began to take off.

On one side stood Barack and Michelle Obama at the New York ceremony. On the other, Donald and Melania Trump at the Pentagon. The caption, “Polar opposites in every way possible,” set the tone.

It didn’t take long before people started weighing in with their own takes.

Trump’s history with 9/11 commemorations has never been entirely straightforward. He has consistently praised first responders, but he has also made claims about the attacks that reporters have questioned, and he has occasionally criticized George W. Bush’s handling of the aftermath.

Just this week, ahead of the anniversary, Trump repeated a version of a long-disputed story, telling reporters “I watched those people jump, and I watched the second plane hit” from what he described as a view of the World Trade Center from his apartment, a claim fact-checkers have poked holes in for years given the distance involved.
