Stephen A. Smith, the ubiquitous ESPN personality, has been wading more frequently into politics in recent years, and that has included occasional meetings with President Donald Trump.

One of those meetings took place recently, and Smith shared some details about what was discussed.

According to HuffPost, Smith recently had dinner with Trump, along with Bill Maher and Kid Rock.

“When he finally saw me, he accused me of being nasty and mean to him because obviously, contrary to what some of you may want to recognize, I have been critical of the president,” Smith said this week on his Straight Shooter podcast.

Trump and Smith have clashed occasionally, including when Smith warned that his favorite team, the New York Knicks, would lose the NBA Finals game that Trump attended in New York. They did lose, although the Knicks won the series and championship.

“Smith’s latest comments — made after attending the dinner with Kid Rock and Bill Maher — conflict with his initial description of the White House affair as ‘pleasant,’ when he told listeners last week it was ultimately a “very substantive evening,” HuffPost reported

He said that Trump — who he noted was defiant when met with criticism — couldn’t have been “nicer” and ‘more complimentary,’ even toward somebody whose aptitude he just questioned weeks ago.”

Smith also defended his decision to meet with the president, for which he was criticized.

“Affordability is an issue, jobs have been lost, Black unemployment has risen. I ain’t happy about it, not by a long shot,” he said,” Smith said on his podcast. “And I think that when you take into account those kinds of things, it’s a very uncomfortable thing to watch, which is why I was looking forward to meeting up with him… But for those that felt like there’s no way on Earth that you should have spoken to the president of the United States, I’m like, ’Have y’all lost your mind?”
