The recent Emmy Awards gave Stephen Colbert his first-ever win for The Late Show. After almost 10 years of being overlooked, the show finally won Outstanding Talk Series at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards.

On his first episode back, Colbert walked out smiling and brought his trophy with him.

“We should have gotten canceled years ago,” Colbert joked as he held up the Emmy. The crowd laughed as he made fun of how it took the end of his show for the Emmys to finally recognize it.

Colbert then gave credit to the people who work behind the scenes.

“This award belongs to the 200 hardworking people who make this show, first and foremost, the writers of this show. Every day, they take down everything I say during the show just so that there’s a script at the end of the night as a souvenir for everybody. It’s incredible. They do it every day,” Colbert said.

“But they don’t do it alone. The stage crew, production staff, talent, editors, the band, control room, props, graphics, research, digital, accounting, legal, wardrobe, make-up, security, maintenance, assistants and interns,” he continued. “And of course, the audience department, who let in all of you gorgeous people every night. Because you, the audience, you people here, you people out there, you are the ones who ultimately make this show possible, so this belongs to you too, but I’m gonna keep it.”

After thanking his team, Colbert shifted to one of his favorite targets.

“Speaking of Emmys, Donald Trump doesn’t have one,” Colbert joked. The audience roared as he reminded everyone of Trump’s long obsession with winning an Emmy for The Apprentice—an award he begged for but never got.

So far, Trump has not reacted. No Truth Social rant, no angry posts, nothing. But with Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and Jon Stewart all in the same category, there’s no way Trump didn’t notice. He may stay silent for now, but it is clear this one will sting.

Colbert, on the other hand, is leaving on a high note. The Late Show will end in 2026, but now it gets to finish as an Emmy-winning show. Colbert gets to enjoy his farewell tour knowing he finally has the trophy Trump always wanted but never received.
