During the afternoon of Tuesday, panic erupted at Kentucky State University when a gunman opened fire on campus. Police said the incident began around 3:30 pm, prompting officers to respond immediately to what they described as an “active aggressor.”
The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, was taken into custody roughly ten minutes later, at around 3:40 pm, authorities said.
One person was killed in the shooting, while another was critically injured. Officials later confirmed the injured person is now in stable condition.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear addressed the incident on X, asking the public to send well wishes to those affected. He said, “We are aware of a reported shooting at Kentucky State University in Frankfort. At this time, we are aware of some injuries. We will share more information as available. Law enforcement is on scene, and a suspect has been arrested. Let’s pray for all those affected.”

The university remains on lockdown as police continue their investigation. Authorities have not yet shared details on the motive behind the shooting.
Kentucky State University is a Historically Black University (HBCU) founded in 1886 and is the only public HBCU in the state. The campus is home to nearly 2,200 students, along with around 450 faculty and staff members.
The school is just ten days away from its winter break, which is scheduled to run from December 19 to January 2, 2026.
