Trouble beyond the base

Eleven months into President Donald Trump’s second term, a new state-by-state polling map shows his approval rating remains firmly underwater across much of the country.

The latest data shows that about 40% of Americans approve of Trump’s job performance. Roughly 56% disapprove. Around 4% say they neither approve nor disapprove.

Those numbers are nearly unchanged from the previous month. The stability suggests opinions have hardened. Very few voters appear to be shifting at this stage.

Trump’s net approval now sits near 16 pts, only marginally better than a month ago. That leaves him well below the 50% mark as he approaches the 1-year point back in office.

Support remains strongest in deep red states. Trump’s highest approval is in Wyoming at 66%. He also posts strong positive numbers in West Virginia, Idaho, North Dakota, Montana, and Oklahoma, each with net approval above +15 pts.

Other Republican-leaning states with positive net approval include Alabama, South Dakota, Arkansas, Kentucky, and Utah. In these states, Trump continues to face limited resistance.

The picture flips sharply in Democratic strongholds. Vermont, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, California, Rhode Island, Washington, Oregon, and New York all show net disapproval worse than –30 pts.

Swing states remain a major problem. In Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and North Carolina, disapproval exceeds approval in every case. The margins range from roughly –11% to –15%.

Even in states Trump carried previously, including North Carolina and Texas, more voters now disapprove than approve.

Demographic divides are just as stark. Among voters aged 18–34, only 27% approve, while 68% disapprove. Among voters with postgraduate degrees, approval sits at 28%, with 69% disapproving.

Trump performs best among Republicans, with 87% approving. Among non-college graduates, approval stands at 43%. Among seniors, approval and disapproval are nearly evenly split.

Racial gaps remain wide. White voters are almost evenly divided, with about 47% approving and 49% disapproving. Among Black voters, approval drops to roughly 9%, while nearly 88% disapprove.

Hispanic and Latino voters also lean strongly against Trump. About 33% approve, while roughly 67% disapprove.

The White House has dismissed the latest approval numbers, pointing instead to what it says are clear economic gains.

Spokesman Kush Desai said the administration has made “critical progress to turn the page on Joe Biden’s economic disaster,” citing “cooling inflation, rising real wages, private-sector job growth, and trillions in investments to make and hire in America.” He added that the White House plans to keep pressing forward to deliver “economic relief for the American people.”
