The “Gen Z Effect”: How Trump’s Approval Rating Just Took A Major Turn

His popularity is crumbling

According to the latest Economist/YouGov poll, President Donald Trump’s support among young voters has dropped sharply. Only 25% of Americans aged 18 to 29 approve of his job as president, while 67% disapprove. That gives him a net rating of -42, the lowest ever recorded for this age group.

Just a week earlier, Trump’s approval among Gen Z was 33%, with 62% disapproving. This shows his support is falling fast and his standing among the youngest voters is weakening rapidly.

This is part of a bigger trend.

In December 2025, 29% approved of Trump and 66% disapproved, net -37. Back in April 2025, approval was 32% and disapproval 53%, net -21. Even earlier, in February 2025, 52% of young adults approved of Trump, while 43% disapproved, net +9.

Over the past year, Trump has gone from being slightly popular with young voters to deeply unpopular. Approval is dropping while disapproval keeps rising, showing that his image with this group is fragile.

Young voters are critical in close elections, especially in swing districts. Low support from this group could hurt Republicans even if overall voter turnout is moderate.

The survey, conducted from Feb 6 to 9 among 1,730 U.S. adults, used a weighted sample to represent the population. Party identification was self-reported, and the margin of error for 18-29-year-olds was ±3.1%.

Gen Z voters care about issues like fairness, social rights, and climate change. Trump’s speeches, policies, and attacks on opponents often do not resonate with them. Many see him as disconnected from their priorities.

The big drop in approval shows how fast young voters can change their minds. Even one statement, event, or tweet can sway them right away. For the Republican Party this is a clear warning that they cannot assume Gen Z will support them.

Last week, President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social, “The highest Poll Numbers I have ever received. Obviously, people like a strong and powerful Country, with the best economy, EVER!”

Despite his claim, senior elections analyst Eli McKown‑Dawson wrote in the Silver Bulletin that Trump’s approval is still struggling. He noted, “After a consistent downward trend, Donald Trump’s approval rating has leveled out and somewhat improved this week. Today, it’s up to -13.7 on net, compared to -14.6 one week ago. Even still, the share of Americans who strongly disapprove of Trump broke 46 percent for the first time yesterday.”

Democrats see a chance in these numbers. With Trump’s approval so low among young people, they could turn out in large numbers for the midterms. Winning over this group in key districts could make a real difference.
