It’s fairly clear that Donald Trump has never been a particularly religious person, nor has religion ever been a major part of his life. However, throughout his political career, he’s long had the Christian right, including some of its most prominent leaders, as some of his strongest supporters. Trump has claimed that he was “saved by God” when he survived the assassination attempt in Butler in July of 2024.

More recently, Trump has been musing about how he might not make it to heaven.

“I never get a fair break from the Fake News … because last time I was having a lot of fun … and I’m talking about the fact that I will never make it to heaven,” Trump told the National Prayer Breakfast in February.

“You know, I’m being a little cute: I don’t think there’s anything that’s going to get me into heaven. I think I’m not maybe heaven-bound,” Trump said in that speech. “I may be in heaven right now as we fly in Air Force One. I’m not sure I’m going to be able to make heaven.”

This weekend, on Palm Sunday, Trump shared a letter from Rev. Franklin Graham, the son of the late Rev. Billy Graham, seeming to “confirm” that Trump is headed to heaven.

“It is an important issue to know for certain that your soul is secure and will spend eternity in the presence of God,” Graham wrote in the letter. “The only One who can save us from Hell is Jesus Christ.”

“The only way to Heaven is through the shed blood of Jesus Christ,” Graham added. “Jesus came to earth, died on the cross for our sins, was buried, and God raised Him to life on the third day. If you accept that by faith and invite Him to come into your heart, you ARE heaven bound, I promise you.”

Earlier in the week, Graham had backtracked from comments, from a speech at CPAC, that he would be working for Trump’s re-election.

Another prominent religious leader, Pope Leo, had something very different to say on Palm Sunday: “Jesus does not listen to the prayers of those who wage war, he rejects.”
