Donald Trump and his allies have never been very shy about attacking their political opponents in deeply personal terms. And that includes Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY), a Republican in Congress who is often critical of Trump on libertarian grounds. Massie was one of the leading figures in Congress who pushed for the release of the Epstein files.

In mid-2024, Massie’s first wife, Rhonda, passed away from a combination of autoimmune diseases. Just over a year later, in the fall of 2025, Massie remarried to a woman named Carolyn, who was a staffer for Sen. Rand Paul, also of Kentucky.

After the news of the remarriage, Trump’s most callous public supporter, Laura Loomer, saw it fit to “raise questions” about how the first Mrs. Massie had died, and to imply that something untoward had happened. She later called on her fellow conspiracy theorist, Candace Owens, to “investigate.”

Donald Trump didn’t go so far as to imply that Massie was a murderer. But he did, earlier this week, allege that it was Massie’s “radical” new wife who was pushing him to oppose Trump.

“People are saying that Thomas Massie became a Liberal because his new wife, blessed be their marriage, is supposedly a Radical Left ‘flamethrower,'” Trump said on Truth Social. “This new union all went so fast that maybe he didn’t know what he was getting into but, nevertheless, he is an absolutely terrible and unreliable “Republican” — Perhaps a RINO, or maybe even worse!” Trump went on to tout Ed Gallrein, “a Farmer and War Hero” who is running against Massie.

Massie responded to Trump’s claims, making clear that his former GOP Senate staffer wife voted for Trump all three times.

“So now he’s attacking my wife who voted for him three times,” Massie said on X. “Maybe someone told him she’s actually the one who suggested I ask Pam Bondi in person at a dinner when we would get Phase 2 of the Epstein files.”
