A taste of his own mockery

At the end of a midterm rally in Grand Island, Nebraska, on Monday, Donald Trump walked past the section of curtain pulled aside for his exit and kept clapping and giving thumbs-ups while “Y.M.C.A.” played, before he found another way off with Secret Service agents following.

The event at the Pinnacle Bank Expo Center, on the Nebraska State Fairgrounds, brought thousands of supporters together. According to the Nebraska Examiner, it was the first presidential visit to Grand Island in roughly 20 years, since George W. Bush came through in 2006. Speakers included Gov. Jim Pillen, Rep. Adrian Smith and Sen. Pete Ricketts, who told the crowd, “We will keep Nebraska red.”

Ricketts is facing independent Dan Osborn, a union steamfitter, in a race where no Democrat is on the ballot. Trump spent much of his speech on turnout. “When I’m not on the ballot, 45% fewer people show up,” he said. “So I’m asking you to do me one favor. Pretend I’m on the ballot.”

He also made a promise with a very large price tag. “If Republicans win the House and Senate, I am going to give all adult citizens $5,000,” Trump said.

At the event, he also signed an executive order allowing tax-free dyed diesel on highways through December 31, claiming, “The typical trucker will save over $100 every time they fill up.”

The curtain scene came at the end of the program. A section had been pulled back for him, with security officers waiting, and Trump went right past it. He clapped and gave thumbs-ups along the stage while the Village People’s anthem played, and additional Secret Service agents followed him until he found a different way out.

The scene echoed a routine Trump has performed himself.

In Anaheim, California, in September 2023, he mocked Joe Biden over finding his way around a stage, saying, “the guy can’t find his way off of a stage,” and walking through an imagined version of the problem. “If I walk left, there’s a stair, and if I walk right, there’s a stair,” he said.

One user made the connection at once. “I guess he had no stair or no ramp and didn’t he just give Biden s– for doing exactly what he just did?” he wrote.

Others joined in.

“Y.M.C.A.” has been part of Trump’s rallies for years, and Village People singer Victor Willis has said he allowed it. “I simply didn’t have the heart to prevent his continued use of my song,” Willis said in December 2024.
