Donald Trump, in the past, has often made fun of the name of Pete Buttigieg, the former presidential candidate who served as Secretary of Transportation in the Biden Administration.
This week, Trump made a comment about Buttigieg that was a bit meaner, although he did continue to make fun of his name.
First on Truth Social, and later speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, the president took the opportunity to blame the former secretary for different air safety issues that have taken place since Trump and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy took over.
“Air Traffic problems caused by the incompetent Biden Administration, as headed by, in this case, a total novice and political hack, Pete B. I WILL FIX IT!!!,” Trump said on Truth Social early Thursday.

Then, Trump took another shot at Buttigieg in the Oval Office.
“Buttigieg who has no clue… he drives to work on his bicycle, in all fairness, with his husband on the back which is a nice loving relationship. But he didn’t have a clue, this guy didn’t have a clue. And he’s actually a contender for president? Between him and [Rep. Jasmine] Crockett, you can have that party.

Buttigieg, at one point in 2021, biked to the White House for a cabinet meeting, an event that he was falsely accused of staging. He did not have his husband on his back at the time.
The former secretary, who was mayor of South Bend, Indiana, before his 2020 presidential run, switched his residency to Michigan during the Biden Administration. Buttigieg had been rumored to be seeking office in that state, but decided against running for the open U.S. Senate seat.

There were some surprised reactions to what the president said about Buttigieg:
The “in all fairness” is the unsung MVP in making this an all-timer. https://t.co/cPdTukgGt2

Buttigieg has been frequently praised for giving interviews in unlikely places, including on Fox News, and he also recently appeared on the Flagrant podcast, one of the “bro” podcasts that Trump appeared on during the 2024 campaign. On the show, Buttigieg made a wonky case against various Trump Administration policies, including the DOGE cuts , while also sharing personal stories about the process of adopting children.
