Trump Attempts To Clarify His Recent Remarks About The Medal of Honor, But Only Seems To Make It Worse

Donald Trump hasn't learned, even as a former president, how to treat our veterans.

From the time Donald Trump came down the escalator to announce he would run for the White House; he’s targeted various demographics. Many which have a history of being marginalized. No one expected for anyone to marginalize veterans.

Last Thursday he targeted Medal of Honor recipients, saying that they often received it for being horribly wounded or often dead. The comparison was that recipients of the Medal of Freedom were better because those receiving it were healthy, and in the case of wealthy GOP mega-donor, Miriam Adelson, beautiful.

The statement was made at his Bedminster golf club, but on Saturday, he was asked about this statement which he doubled down on.

ā€œI only heard when I say ā€˜better,ā€™ I would rather, in a certain way, get it, because people that get the Congressional Medal of Honor ā€” which Iā€™ve given to many ā€” are often horribly wounded or dead. Theyā€™re often dead. They get it posthumously. When you get the Congressional Medal of Honor ā€” I always consider that to be the ultimate, but it is a painful thing to get it. When you get the Presidential Medal of Freedom, itā€™s usually for other things, like youā€™ve achieved great success in sports, or youā€™ve achieved great success someplace else.”

Retired Marine Gen. John Kelly responded to this viaĀ CNN, saying that the Medal of Honor was not won, it was earned.

Veteran Senator Tammy Duckworth also had something to say about his offensive statement.

Governor Chris Sununu (R-NH) was asked about these comments via CNNĀ agreeing that the comments were asinine and that this wasn’t the first time Trump had made them.

It was also reported that he disparaged calling them “losers” and “suckers” which John Kelly confirmed. Trump has of course, denied this saying that those quotes were made up. But with his latest comments, he clearly makes a comparison and we’ve seen in the past, he’s said the same thing about veterans who get captured.

Before Sen. John McCain died, Trump had also targeted him over his service. McCain is considered a war hero and when confronted with this, he refused to refer to the former Naval officer a war hero. This was in response to what John McCain thought about Trump and at the time, it could come across as standard mudslinging in politics, we now know what Trump really thinks about America’s warriors.
