Trump Branded ‘Tone Deaf’ After Assistant Makes Bold Promise

“I didn’t vote for that.” That was the first reply under Margo Martin’s post celebrating Trump’s new airport plan.

She’d shared footage of Trump in the Oval Office unveiling his overhaul of Washington Dulles International Airport. “We are announcing plans to add more than 5 million square feet of new or renovated space. We’ll replace the current C and D concourses, which are basic disasters, all the while preserving the iconic original terminal,” he said.

He lingered on the terminal specifically, explaining why the original Eero Saarinen design was staying despite the complications it added to the rest of the project.

“That is one of the great architects of the world in the original terminal, and it was very, very important that it be left. That’s one of the reasons. It was both an asset and a liability. The liability is that nobody wanted to build anything near it and people had to walk crazy distances and it’s no good, not acceptable. We’ve addressed it all and we have a plan that is going to be phenomenal. But we’re gonna replace the C and D concourses and preserve the iconic original terminal that first made airport an architectural landmark.”

Martin kept her caption short: “.@POTUS announces the renovation of Washington Dulles International Airport!” with an airplane and flag emoji attached.

Her followers were not similarly brief.

One pivoted straight into monetary policy. “It seems tone-deaf that he continues to spend on beatification projects while the Fed keeps the American dream unattainable in all sectors. A change of the guard has accomplished little at the Fed.”

That same commenter followed up with a decades-old Ronald Reagan quote about interest rates: “One of my major concerns today is high interest rates. They hurt everyone—people who must borrow, families who want to buy a new home, businesses struggling to get ahead. High interest rates present the greatest single threat today to a healthy, lasting recovery.”

Other replies skipped the economics angle entirely and cut straight to something harsher.

The project generating all this backlash is genuinely large in scope.

It’s a $22.5 billion plan financed through the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority and low-interest municipal bonds rather than taxpayer funds directly, covering four new concourses, expanded parking and an AeroTrain system meant to finally retire the mobile lounge shuttles Dulles has used since the 1960s.

Trump framed it as personally satisfying to oversee. “This is very exciting to me as a builder — somebody that builds lots of big, nice projects before I got here, and we’re doing some of the best in the world right now,” he said.
