Another fight for headlines

Donald Trump has finally spoken after the FBI raided the home of his former national security adviser John Bolton. Trump said he did not know about the raid. He told reporters that he only learned about it when it appeared on the news.

But even while saying he was in the dark, Trump could not hold back his anger. He called Bolton a “low-life” and “not a smart guy.” Trump also mocked him as a quiet man who only speaks when he wants to insult Trump on television. “He doesn’t talk, he’s like a very quiet person except on television and then he can say something bad about Trump. He’ll always do that,” Trump said.

The raid itself was serious. FBI agents were seen at Bolton’s home in the Washington DC area on Friday morning. Reports say it is part of an investigation into classified documents. That detail alone makes this more than a small dispute between two old rivals.

At the same time, Trump is preparing to make a mysterious announcement from the Oval Office. It is scheduled for noon, but the White House has refused to say what it will be about. The timing is too perfect to ignore. Many believe Trump will use the raid to attack his enemies and present himself as the victim once again.

Bolton, of course, is not just any former aide. He has a long history in government. He worked as an ambassador to the United Nations under George W. Bush. He also served in the Justice Department during the Reagan years. When Trump became president, Bolton became his third national security adviser. But it did not last long. They clashed over Iran, Afghanistan, and North Korea. By 2019, Bolton was out of the job and ready to fight back.

That fight took shape in 2020 when Bolton published his memoir The Room Where It Happened. The book painted Trump as reckless and desperate for foreign help. It was full of damaging details. Trump’s Justice Department tried to stop the release, claiming it had classified material. They failed, and the book came out anyway.

From that point on, the relationship was beyond repair. Trump lashed out at Bolton every chance he got. And when he returned to office, he made it personal. He stripped Bolton of his security clearances. He even took away his Secret Service protection. Trump signed an executive order accusing Bolton of reckless handling of sensitive information. The order even named his book as the reason.
