Much attention has been paid over the years to Donald Trump’s strange handshakes, usually with other world leaders. His odd handshakes with French President Emmanuel Macron, in particular, have made news on several different occasions over the past eight years. The Wikipedia entry about “Donald Trump and handshakes” is lengthy, with more than 40 citations.

“They say the handshake originated as a gesture designed to prove that both participants were unarmed. But Donald Trump has rewritten that rule along with all the others. In the hands of the US president, the handshake is a weapon,” a Guardian article from 2017 said.

Per The Daily Beast, Trump is now complaining that the constant handshakes are starting to hurt his hands.

On Tuesday, the president welcomed the LSU and LSU-Shreveport championship baseball teams to the White House, and made the comments after shaking the hands of LSU players Steven Milam and Josh Pearson.

“They’re very strong hands, I’m noticing,” Trump said of the two baseball players. “You know, they’re ripping me, they’re ripping my hand up.”

The White House has, in the past, claimed that frequent handshaking is one of the reasons for the mysterious bruising that has appeared on Trump’s hand.

“Trump has attempted to conceal his bruising with makeup, which often does not match his skin tone, or by simply covering his right hand with his left,” the Daily Beast said of the hand bruising, while also noting that it hasn’t been spotted since early October.

“The president is right-handed and used his dominant hand when greeting the ball players at Monday’s ceremony, which honored LSU baseball for winning the national championship last summer. He also honored LSU Shreveport, which went undefeated and won the NAIA title,” The Beast said.

Also appearing at the event was Herschel Walker, the former NFL running back and Trump friend who lost a Senate race in Georgia following a series of embarrassing scandals involving alleged business wrongdoing as well as affairs. Walker was invited to address the LSU team despite having played for the University of Georgia, a rival SEC school.
Walker was recently confirmed as ambassador to the Bahamas.
