In his quest for revenge against his many enemies, to be delivered through the legal system, President Donald Trump was dealt a big blow on Monday.

Per ABC News, a judge has tossed the indictments against former FBI director James Comey and  New York Attorney General Letitia James because the prosecutor who brought the charges, U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan, was not appointed legally. The charges were dismissed ” without prejudice,” meaning they could be brought against by a different prosecutor.

U.S. District Judge Cameron McGowan Currie handed down the ruling.

Per the New York Times, the ruling “deals a heavy blow to a pair of high-profile prosecutions sought by President Trump, who has pushed the Justice Department to pursue his political enemies.” The Administration is expected to repeal the ruling, although the judge noted that in Comey’s case, the statute of limitations has now expired.

The Times described the ruling as “the most significant setback yet for President Trump’s effort to dictate how the Justice Department handles criminal cases, but the dismissals are unlikely to be the last word on an issue that many lawyers expect to reach the Supreme Court.”

“The Attorney General’s attempt to install Ms. Halligan as Interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia was invalid,” the judge ruled in the case, per CNN. The judge added that “all actions flowing from Ms. Halligan’s defective appointment… were unlawful exercises of executive power and are hereby set aside.”

James, who as attorney general filed suit against the Trump Organization and won, expressed thanks for the ruling.

Comey addressed the decision on Instagram.

“I’m grateful that the court ended the case against me, which was a prosecution based on malevolence and incompetence and a reflection of what the Department of Justice has become under Donald Trump, which is heartbreaking,” the former FBI director said on Instagram. “But I was also inspired by the example of the career people who refuse to be part of this travesty. It cost some of them their jobs, which is painful, but it preserved their integrity, which is beyond price.”
