Prince Harry can breathe easy – at least for now. President Donald Trump has made it clear that he has no plans to deport the Duke of Sussex despite an ongoing legal battle over his immigration status. But, in true Trump fashion, he couldn’t resist taking a swipe at Meghan Markle.
“I don’t want to do that,” Trump said on Friday, referring to Harry’s potential deportation. “I’ll leave him alone. He’s got enough problems with his wife. She’s terrible.”
The controversy around Harry’s immigration status started when The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, filed a lawsuit questioning whether he was truthful about past drug use when applying for his U.S. visa.
In his memoir Spare, Harry openly admitted to using cocaine, cannabis, and psychedelic mushrooms. According to U.S. immigration laws, lying about drug use can make someone ineligible for a visa. The Heritage Foundation argues that he may have received special treatment under President Biden’s administration.

Trump’s stance might surprise some, considering his history of pushing for strict immigration policies. However, even with the legal fight heating up, Trump seems more interested in mocking Meghan than deporting Harry.
Back in 2014, Canadian pop star Justin Bieber found himself in hot water after a series of legal troubles, including a DUI arrest. This led to an absolutely hilarious moment in American democracy—a petition urging the Obama administration to deport Bieber. The White House, clearly having more significant things to deal with, responded in the most diplomatic way possible: by saying immigration laws were taken seriously and then completely ignoring the Bieber drama.
Even royalty has faced visa problems before. In the 1930s, former King Edward VIII, who gave up the British throne, had difficulties moving to the U.S. His connections to Nazi Germany raised concerns, though he was never officially banned.
Trump’s dislike for Meghan Markle is nothing new. During his 2016 presidential campaign, Meghan called him “divisive” and “misogynistic.” Trump, never one to hold back, responded by saying he was not a fan of hers. In 2021, after Meghan and Harry’s famous Oprah interview, Trump reportedly told his aides, “She’s no good… I said it, and now everybody is seeing it.” He even claimed to feel sorry for Prince Harry, saying Meghan had “whipped” him.
