Recently, President Donald Trump announced a new trade deal with India.
Under the agreement, the United States plans to cut tariffs on Indian goods from 25% to 18 %. In return, India agreed to stop buying Russian oil and lower import taxes on American products, in some cases down to zero.
Trump framed the deal as more than trade. He said it could help pressure Russia and bring the war in Ukraine closer to an end.
“This will help END THE WAR in Ukraine,” Trump wrote on Truth Social, adding that thousands of people are dying every week.

India has been under steady pressure from Washington over its Russian oil imports. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, India bought discounted Russian crude while most of the world tried to cut ties with Moscow. Trump made it clear he wanted that to end.
Now, India says it is on board.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the announcement and praised Trump’s leadership. “I look forward to working closely with him to take our partnership to unprecedented heights,” Modi said.
Wonderful to speak with my dear friend President Trump today. Delighted that Made in India products will now have a reduced tariff of 18%. Big thanks to President Trump on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India for this wonderful announcement.

The deal also carries a massive promise. Trump said India will buy around $500 billion worth of American goods. It sounds strong, but no one knows when it will happen or how it will work.
The announcement came alongside a bold social media move. Trump shared the cover of India Today magazine’s “Newsmakers of the Year 2025” edition, featuring him and Modi side by side with the headline: “The mover & the shaker.” The post had no caption, leaving many to speculate on its meaning.

It’s not hilarious if you realize they are both using the disruption narrative to sell the deal at home.
