Donald Trump made an eyebrow-raising claim on Monday: That a former president told him that he wishes he had invaded Iran.

“I’ve spoken to a certain president, who I like actually, a past president, he said, ‘I wish I did it.’ But they didn’t do it. I’m doing it,” Trump said on Monday. “I can’t tell you that. It would be very bad for his career even though he’s got no career left.”

The claim was somewhat shocking because there are only a handful of living ex-presidents, and none of them have a particularly cordial relationship with Trump. If the story is true, and it might not be, the only possibilities are Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden.

Obama and Biden are longtime Trump enemies, whom Trump is unlikely to be confiding in at this point. Bush may very well have invaded Iran, if the Iraq War had gone better, but Trump and Bush aren’t exactly pals either.

Bill Clinton is a possibility, since he and Trump were once golf buddies before Trump got into politics, but they too have had bad blood with each other in recent years. Clinton could have hawkish in his foreign policy, but he never came close to attacking Iran as president.

Some social media users had fun speculating.
