Donald Trump is celebrating a decision by West Point to cancel an award ceremony meant to honor Tom Hanks. On Truth Social, Trump called the move “smart” and slammed the actor as a “destructive, WOKE recipient” of the prize.
“Our great West Point (getting greater all the time!) has smartly cancelled the Award Ceremony for actor Tom Hanks,” Trump wrote. “Important move! We don’t need destructive, WOKE recipients getting our cherished American Awards!!! Hopefully the Academy Awards, and other Fake Award Shows, will review their Standards and Practices in the name of Fairness and Justice. Watch their DEAD RATINGS SURGE!”
The award ceremony was set for September 25. Hanks was to be recognized as an “outstanding citizen” with a long record of social service. West Point said the honor reflected the academy’s core values of “Duty, Honor, Country.”

Mark Bieger, president and CEO of the West Point Association of Graduates, announced the cancelation in an email to faculty. He said the change would allow the academy to “focus on its core mission of preparing cadets to lead, fight, and win as officers in the world’s most lethal force, the United States Army.”
Trump has a long history of attacking Hollywood figures on social media. He famously called George Clooney a “fake movie actor” after Clooney spoke out against Trump’s presidential run.
Clooney responded calmly on CBS Mornings, saying, “I don’t care. I’ve known Donald Trump for a long time. My job is not to please the President of the United States. My job is to try and tell the truth when I can and when I have the opportunity. I am well aware of the idea that people will not like that… People will criticize that. Elon Musk has weighed in [about me]. That is their right. It’s my right to say the other side.”
Hanks has not publicly commented on West Point canceling his award. The actor has long been admired for his work in film and his charitable efforts, making him a frequent figure in conversations about public service.
The cancelation comes amid growing debates over “woke culture” in institutions and entertainment. Trump seized the moment to attack both Hanks and Hollywood more broadly, linking the decision to his criticism of award shows. His post singled out the Academy Awards, predicting their “dead ratings” will climb if they adjust their standards.
