President Donald Trump explained Monday why his voice was hoarse during an Oval Office press briefing. When asked if he was feeling all right, Trump said it was from raising his voice while dealing with trade issues.

“I feel great,” Trump said. He admitted he had been “shouting at people because they were stupid about something having to do with trade in a country,” and added, “I blew my stack at these people … it’s so stupid.” The room laughed at the comment, and Trump appeared to enjoy the reaction.

NBC White House correspondent Garrett Haake had initially asked about Venezuela, but Trump’s voice quickly became the main story. “What?” Trump replied when Haake tried to move the conversation back to the foreign policy question. The reporter pressed, “It sounds like there’s a follow-up there, but can I ask you about Venezuela?”

Trump responded, “I thought you said there was a polyp, and I said — I don’t want to hear that. Okay.”

The mix-up caused more laughter in the room. Trump then returned to the trade issue, saying that a certain country “wanted to try and renegotiate the terms of their trade deal, and I wasn’t happy about it,” but he did not reveal which country it was.

His admission about shouting at people over trade sparked reactions on social media.

The president’s strained voice came at a moment when Americans are watching closely how trade issues affect prices and the economy. Rising costs and supply chain concerns have made the public more sensitive to foreign negotiations.
