This felt so unnecessary

Speaking at the Mount Airy Casino Resort, President Donald Trump slipped into a strange rant while talking about rising costs. He was onstage for more than 90 minutes, trying to defend his economic record after new polls showed many Americans are unhappy with prices.

Trump again said the affordability worries are a “con job” and insisted he has already fixed the problem. Then, while defending his tariffs, he suddenly shifted to pencils and dolls.

He told the crowd:

“You can give up pencils. That’s under the China policy. You know, every child can get 37 pencils. They only need one or two, you know. They don’t need that many.”

A moment later, he added:

“You don’t need 37 dolls for your daughter. Two or three is nice, but you don’t need 37 dolls.”

Before that, Trump praised his tariff plan and said it helped steel workers, telling the audience:

“With our historic tariffs, steel production is roaring back… If we didn’t have tariffs, you would have no steel. We wouldn’t have one steel mill anywhere in the United States.”

He pushed the point further:

“You always need steel.”

He was trying to explain why the tariffs matter, but the whole pencils-and-dolls part took over fast. The clip blew up on X as people reacted to how suddenly his speech went in a weird direction.
