Donald Trump gave a strange response Friday morning when asked about the death of his ally Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot Wednesday while speaking at Utah Valley University.

While reports said Trump was close to him and shaken by the loss, he didn’t sound like a man in mourning. Instead, he shifted to bragging about his new obsession — building a White House ballroom.

Speaking on Fox & Friends, Trump recalled learning about Kirk’s death while meeting with architects. “I was in the midst of, you know, building a great—for 150 years they’ve wanted a ballroom at the White House, right? They don’t have a ballroom, they have to use tents on the lawn for President Xi when he comes over; if it rains it’s a wipeout, and so I was with architects that were design[ing]—it’s gonna be incredible,” Trump rambled.

Later that day, outside the White House, the topic of Kirk’s death came up again. A reporter asked Trump directly: “How are you holding up over the last three and a half days?” The reporter also offered condolences.

Trump’s answer surprised many. “I think very good,” he replied. “And by the way, right there you see all the trucks; they just started construction of the new ballroom for the White House. Which is something they’ve been trying to get as you know for about 150 years, and it’s gonna be a beauty, it’ll be an absolutely magnificent structure.

“And I just see all the trucks, they just started, so it’ll get done uh very nicely and it’ll be one of the best anywhere in the world, actually.”

The president’s words spread quickly across social media. For many, the contrast between Kirk’s sudden death and Trump’s fixation on construction was too much.

“Now this is how you respect a man’s memory,” politics podcaster Briahna Joy Gray wrote sarcastically on X.

Democratic influencer Joanne Carducci also weighed in. “I vehemently disagreed with every single thing Charlie Kirk ever said, and I was able to express more empathy than this,” she wrote.

Many also accused him of failing to even pretend to care about Kirk’s death.

Trump first announced the ballroom project in July. The new hall, a 90,000-square-foot addition that can seat 650 people, is part of his effort to remake the White House into something resembling Mar-a-Lago. He has described it as “absolutely magnificent” and “one of the best anywhere in the world.”
