Donald Trump, on Thursday night, launched an unhinged, apropos-of-nothing rant at Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN), the first half of which was directed at Somalia, the country that the Congresswoman emigrated from.
“Ilhan Omar’s Country of Somalia is plagued by a lack of central Government control, persistent Poverty, Hunger, Resurgent Terrorism, Piracy, decades of Civil War, Corruption, and pervasive Violence,” the president wrote on his social network. “70% of the population lives in extreme Poverty, and widespread Food Insecurity. Somalia is consistently ranked among the World’s Most Corrupt Countries, including Bribery, Embezzlement, and a Dysfunctional Government. All of this, and Ilhan Omar tells us how to run America!”
“P.S. Wasn’t she the one that married her brother in order to gain Citizenship??? What SCUM we have in our Country, telling us what to do, and how to do it. Thank you for your attention to this matter,” the president said.

The rumor that Omar had married her brother, perhaps in some sort of effort to commit immigration fraud, has been leveled at her throughout her public career, including by Trump himself, during his first term in 2019.
Omar has always denied the allegation, stating in 2016 that the rumor was “absolutely false and ridiculous,” while also releasing a timeline of her marital history. “No proof has emerged substantiating these claims,” the New York Times stated in 2019.
The rumor about her brother appears to have originated in news forums operated by the Somali-American community in Minnesota, while it’s also been pushed frequently by conservative media outlets, both in Minnesota and nationally.

Also this week, Republicans in the House made an unsuccessful push, led by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) to censure Omar and remove her from committees, after some Republicans agreed to join Democrats in voting against the measure.
The resolution was in relation to comments Omar made about Charlie Kirk after his assassination, in which she condemned the killing, but she did criticize Kirk. “There is nothing more f-ed up to completely pretend his words and actions have not been recorded and in existence for the last decade or so,” Omar had said in the interview with Zeteo.
