Power, not peace, rules

Shortly after ordering strikes on Iran, President Trump announced that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had been killed, along with most of the top decision‑makers. He claimed other senior Iranian officials were also eliminated.

“He was unable to avoid our Intelligence and Highly Sophisticated Tracking Systems and, working closely with Israel, there was not a thing he, or the other leaders that have been killed along with him, could do,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. He added, “The heavy and pinpoint bombing, however, will continue, uninterrupted throughout the week or, as long as necessary to achieve our objective of PEACE THROUGHOUT THE MIDDLE EAST AND, INDEED, THE WORLD!”

Reports from Tehran showed huge explosions and thick smoke after sunrise. Residents described fighter jets and missiles overhead, children running from schools, and panicked crowds trying to reach safety.

The Iranian Red Crescent Society said more than 200 people were killed in strikes across the country. Iranian state media claimed a girls’ primary school was hit, killing at least 85 children.

Iran responded with missiles and drones targeting Israel and Gulf nations, including Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, and the UAE. Air raid sirens sounded in Israel, and Jordan reported intercepting 49 incoming drones and missiles.

Capt. Tim Hawkins of U.S. Central Command said reports of civilian harm were being investigated. “The protection of civilians is of utmost importance,” he said.

The strikes, called “Epic Fury” by the U.S. and “Roaring Lion” by Israel, followed weeks of tension and military buildup.

Trump said diplomatic talks had failed. “We are going to destroy their missiles and raze their missile industry to the ground. It will be totally, again, obliterated. We’re going to annihilate their navy,” he stated. He also warned the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps: “Lay down your arms. You will be treated fairly with total immunity, or you will face certain death.”

While the president claimed Iran was rebuilding its nuclear program, experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency said there was no evidence of resumed uranium enrichment.

The operation was coordinated between the U.S. and Israeli militaries, striking multiple meetings of senior Iranian officials simultaneously. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said the goal was to “remove the existential threat posed by the terrorist regime in Iran.”

The U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres condemned both the strikes and Iran’s retaliation. “We are witnessing a grave threat to international peace and security,” he said. “There is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes. Lasting peace can only be achieved through peaceful means, including genuine dialogue and negotiations.”

In Israel, a 48-hour state of emergency was declared, with air raid sirens and hospitals moving operations underground. Gulf nations reported Iranian missile attacks, with at least one foreign national killed in Abu Dhabi.
