Željka Cvijanović is not new to international headlines. In 2023, the United States placed sanctions on her and 3 other Bosnian Serb leaders for allegedly undermining the peace agreement that ended the Bosnian war. The United Kingdom also sanctioned her in 2022. Her country, Bosnia and Herzegovina, has long been sensitive to international relations due to its complicated political structure and past conflict.

The trade push itself has already rattled markets. After Trump posted the letters online, the Dow dropped by over 500 points. Financial analysts blamed rising fears over possible trade disruptions with multiple countries at once.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt tried to put a positive spin on it during a press briefing. She praised the letters to Japan and South Korea as “beautiful” and said they reflect Trump’s commitment to fair trade.
