Back in March, when relations between Donald Trump and Elon Musk were still smooth, the president held a “car show” at the White House to show support for Musk amid the backlash against Tesla, which included several reported instances of vandalism. He even implied, very falsely, that it would be “illegal” to organize a boycott of Tesla.
During the event, Trump, formerly a vocal skeptic of electric cars, announced that he would be purchasing a Tesla Model S. He made this announcement in support of Musk, even though, as president, Trump is not allowed to drive himself anywhere. The car has been parked at the White House for the last three months, where it has reportedly been occasionally used by aides.
But now that Trump and Musk have had a falling out, Trump plans to sell or possibly give away the Tesla, a White House official confirmed to the New York Post. He also stated at the March event that he had purchased a Tesla Cybertruck for his granddaughter Kai, although it’s not confirmed if she plans to keep the car.
Likely this happened bc Trump distanced himself from Musk after the Wisconsin loss.
Musk saw the writing on the wall.
Picking a fight over tariffs will make it look like he was dumped for speaking his mind.

The previously close relationship between Trump and Musk blew up this week after a series of disagreements about the “Big Beautiful Bill,” as well as Trump stating that he might not have as close a relationship with Musk going forward after his recent departure from his government role. By the end of the day on Thursday, Musk was accusing Trump of being involved in Jeffrey Epstein’s crimes, while Trump was threatening to pull government contracts from Musk’s companies.
The Trump/Musk rupture has led to finger-pointing within the MAGA movement, as well as concerns on the Republican side that it could harm the party’s efforts to win the midterm elections. Not only has Musk indicated that he won’t be donating to Republicans, as he did in the 2024 cycle, but he has also threatened to back primary challenges.
“I’m not even thinking about Elon. He’s got a problem. The poor guy’s got a problem,” Trump told CNN in an interview on Friday.
