A celebration for women didn’t stay on theme for long once Donald Trump took the microphone.

The White House hosted a gathering for Women’s History Month on Thursday. The room was filled with female cabinet members, guests, and the First Lady, Melania Trump. The event was supposed to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women.

For a moment, it actually sounded like that was the plan.

Trump praised women and called them powerful and important. He even said they were beautiful.

“They are so powerful and so important and so beautiful,” Trump said. “I’m not allowed to use the word beautiful, but I’m using it anyway. Usually it’s the end of your political career. If you say a woman’s a beautiful woman, they say that’s the termination of his career. But somehow it hasn’t hurt too much.”

That line quickly changed the tone in the room. Soon after, the focus moved away from women and back to Trump and his agenda.

Trump then shifted to foreign policy and the situation with Iran. “The situation with Iran is moving along very rapidly. It’s doing very well. Our military is unsurpassed,” he told the audience. “There’s never been anything like it.”

From there, the speech kept drifting further away from the theme. Trump began promoting tariffs and voter ID laws. He also spoke about what he called the “One Big Beautiful Bill,” before suddenly renaming it during the speech.

“I say ‘Great Big Beautiful Bill’ because I like it better,” Trump said. “Because that’s what it is.”

He also repeated a policy position that his administration will only recognize two genders. The comment came during a Women’s History Month event that was supposed to highlight the achievements of women across the country.

The president also talked about international sporting events coming to the United States. “We have the Olympics and we have the World Cup coming up,” he told the audience. “I did the Olympics, I got the Olympics, then I got the World Cup, then I got 250, but I’ve never been given credit for that.”

Later in the event, Olympic champion Kaillie Humphries came forward with a special gift.

Humphries presented Trump with her Order of Ikkos medal. The honor is something Olympic athletes can only give once in their lifetime to someone who helped them during their athletic journey.

“I believe this actually makes you the first president in history to ever be awarded an Order of Ikkos as well,” Humphries said.

Trump appeared pleased with the recognition.

Earlier in the event, Melania Trump had delivered a speech that focused directly on the purpose of the gathering.

“The strength of America is closely tied to the role women play in shaping their children’s character, education, and morals,” she said. She also encouraged young women to take risks and pursue their careers with confidence.
