The president is facing numerous tariff-related lawsuits.

The Supreme Court decision last month striking down the justification for President Trump’s tariffs has opened the floodgates to lawsuits. According to Newsweek, more than 1,000 companies have filed suit over the tariffs, including Costco, Wanxiang Automotive Components, PMI Worldwide, and the attorneys general of more than two dozen U.S. states.

“The tariff disputes center on two separate legal battles. The first involves tariffs the Supreme Court already struck down in February 2026, ruling that Trump exceeded his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. Those tariffs collected $133 billion before being invalidated, and more than 2,000 companies are now suing to recover what they paid,” Newsweek reported.

“The second battle is over Trump’s response. After the Supreme Court ruling, he immediately imposed new 10 percent tariffs under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, signaling plans to raise them to 15 percent. States and companies are now challenging this new tariff regime as an illegal end-run around the court’s decision.”

In March, New York Attorney General Letitia James announced that she was “leading” a lawsuit to “stop the Trump Administration’s latest lawsuits.”

“Once again, President Trump is ignoring the law and the Constitution to effectively raise taxes on consumers and small businesses,” the New York attorney general, who Trump tried and failed to indict last year, said in the announcement. “After the Supreme Court rejected his first attempt to impose sweeping tariffs, the president is causing more economic chaos and expecting Americans to foot the bill. These tariffs will only drive up the cost of living, and I will continue to uphold the rule of law to protect New Yorkers.”

“The Trump administration’s illegal and reckless tariff policies continue to weigh on the businesses, farmers, and consumers across New York State, hindering the state’s overall economy,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said in James’ announcement. “It is time the federal government refunds the $13.5 billion taken from hardworking New Yorkers and end the economic chaos that these unlawful taxes have created. I applaud Attorney General James for fighting for New Yorkers and look forward to continuing to work with her to put money back into the pockets of our families and workers.”
