King Charles is visiting the United States this week, and in a speech today, President Donald Trump made a bizarre statement about his mother once having a crush on the future king.
“She really did love the family,” Trump said of his late mother, Mary, and her feelings on the royal family. “Charles, young Charles… he’s so cute,” he remembered his mother saying, as the king looked on.
“My mother had a crush on Charles. Can you believe it? Amazing. I wonder what she’s thinking right now.”
For context, his mom was 36 when Charles was born… https://t.co/2BV2aUrr4C

Mary Trump, who was Scottish, was 36 when Charles was born in 1948.
Ironically, it’s been widely reported that after the royal separation in the early 1990s, Trump made it clear that he was interested in dating, or possibly marrying, Charles’ former wife, Princess Diana. Trump admitted as much in at least one interview with Howard Stern in the 1990s.
“Trump clearly saw Diana as the ultimate trophy wife,” British journalist Selina Scott wrote in The Sunday Times when Trump was first running for president in 2015. “As the roses and orchids piled up at her apartment, she became increasingly concerned about what she should do. It had begun to feel as if Trump was stalking her.” Diana, while thanking Trump for the flowers, told the journalist that Trump “gives me the creeps.”
“When she died in the tragic accident in Paris in 1997, Trump told friends his biggest regret was that they hadn’t dated. He said that he always thought he had a chance of romance and would have had a ‘shot’ with her,” Scott added.
Journalist Michael Wolff, meanwhile, reported something even more salacious: That Trump and Jeffrey Epstein had engaged in a competition over who could bed the princess.
“They had a competition, Trump and Epstein,” Wolff said on a podcast earlier this year. “Of who would be the one, the first one to sleep with Princess Diana? … They just understood, what could you get from these people? Both Trump and Epstein. What can you get from somebody, is the question you would always ask about anybody.”
