It's impossible to embarrass Donald Trump

It’s impossible to embarrass President Donald Trump. That much became apparent during a press conference at the White House, where he met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. The atmosphere was jovial when a reporter asked if he and Starmer would discuss AUKUS.

“What does that mean?” asked a befuddled Trump.

“The Australia U.S. Defense Alliance?” the reporter answered, perhaps puzzled over the president’s flagrant ignorance. Trump, ever immune to humiliation, plows right on ahead. “Well, we’ll be discussing that. We’ve had another great relationship, and (looking at Starmer) you have too with Australia. We’ve had a very good relationship with Australia.”

Now, it’s one thing for a commoner like me or maybe even you to not know what AUKUS means but it’s Trump’s job to know the meaning. And then to tell Starmer he’s had a good relationship with Australia as if this were some passing thing, when Britain is the main reason for Australia to begin with, since it established a penal colony there in January, 1788. I know his last remark is minor, but c’mon? Trump is that ignorant?

For anyone who, like Trump, doesn’t know what AUKUS is, here’s the 411: AUKUS is a partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the U.S. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, it is intended to “strengthen the ability of each government to support security and defense interests, building on longstanding and ongoing bilateral ties. ”

Plenty of folks on social media didn’t fail to notice how stupid Trump is and they had thoughts.

@DenisonBarbs commented:

“ROTFL. Congratulations America. You elected a Buffoon.”

@ML3democrats quipped:

“Donald Trump is a clown. That’s disastrous for America.”

@BRun13 pointedly asked:

“Everything out of his mouth is filler…dumb, stupid, unintelligible filler. JFC, what did we to [sic] to our great country?”

@RichardAngwin noted:

“Trump’s cluelessness on AUKUS, a critical US-UK-Aus pact, shows he’s still out of his depth. Day 38 and he’s already embarrassing us on the world stage.”

@bestfoodalex wrote “When you didn’t read the book and the teacher calls on you.” I’m willing to bet there’s a lot of books he hasn’t read.

@AntonyDrew7 added some context about AUKUS:

“I mean it’s not as if he didn’t have the UK PM sitting next to him, to give some context to the question. Not to mention Australia just made a down payment of $500m last week for submarines!”

Indeed, according to Wikipedia, AUKUS was formed to “promote a free and open Indo-Pacific that is secure and stable. ”

At least one person posted something notedly short but equally biting:

“IQ of a potato,” @wcbuecker wrote.

You’ll find no argument here.
