As Donald Trump’s Tuesday night deadline for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz approaches, the president made what may be the most ominous threat to Iran yet.

“A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,” was how Trump’s early-morning Truth Social post said. It’s the sort of statement that would be treated as a civilizational threat if an Iranian mullah said it about the United States or Israel. But that was how Trump addressed Iran during a time of war.

“A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again,” was the start of the full text of the post. “I don’t want that to happen, but it probably will. However, now that we have Complete and Total Regime Change, where different, smarter, and less radicalized minds prevail, maybe something revolutionarily wonderful can happen, WHO KNOWS? We will find out tonight, one of the most important moments in the long and complex history of the World. 47 years of extortion, corruption, and death, will finally end. God Bless the Great People of Iran!”

The idea seems to be to get Iran to fold and bring the conflict to an end, but it appears unlikely that this strategy will succeed, at least in the short term.

“The U.S. attacked Kharg Island, the export hub, while Israel and Iran traded fresh attacks and Israel’s military warned Iranians to avoid traveling by train. The increasingly incendiary threats and the intense fighting reinforced the fragile state of diplomacy, with no public signs of a diplomatic breakthrough to end the war,” the New York Times reported of the latest developments in the war.

There were some shocked reactions online to the threats from Trump.
