U.S. President Donald Trump used a speech on Wednesday to defend the need for skilled foreign workers in American factories, even as some of his own supporters strongly oppose the idea.

The comments came during the U.S.–Saudi Arabia Investment Forum in Washington. Trump spoke about the value of foreign professionals in training American workers and keeping big projects on schedule.

To make his point, he brought up the September immigration raid at a Korean battery plant site in Georgia. More than 300 Korean workers were arrested. The raid created fear among investors and raised questions about whether the United States is still a dependable place to build factories.

Trump told the audience that the raid almost shut the whole project down.

“We had one case in Georgia … batteries are very dangerous to make. They are complex, much more complex than people understand. And they spent a billion dollars to build a factory, and they were told to get out,” he said.

He said he stepped in to stop the deportations.

“I said, ‘Stop it. Don’t be stupid.’ And we worked it out, and now they are teaching our people how to do it.”

Trump also stressed that America needs to learn how to build high tech products. He said American workers have not made these kinds of products before, and foreign workers must show them the process.

“We are not going to be successful if we do not allow people that invest billions of dollars in plant and equipment to bring a lot of their people from their country to get that plant open, operating and working,” he said. “I am sorry.”

The president then tried to calm his conservative supporters from the MAGA movement who believe all foreign workers should be kept out. He insisted that these workers are only temporary.

“I am going to welcome those people. Now, I love my conservative friends. I love MAGA, but this is MAGA,” he said. “Those people are going to teach our people how to make computer chips, and in a short period of time, our people are going to be doing great, and those people can go home where they probably always want to be.”

Trump also admitted that he hears plenty of complaints from his own base.

“I always take a little heat from my people, the people that love me and the people that I love.”

Trump’s blunt remark calling Homeland Security “stupid,” however, shocked a lot of people. Many reacted online, mocking him and pointing out the irony of his “America first” words.
