Trump Loses It After GOP Election Collapse, Blames Everything But Himself

It was a wipeout for most Trump-endorsed candidates in off-year elections on Tuesday night.

Tuesday night is shaping up to be a not-so-good election night for the Republican Party.

In both the elections for governor in New Jersey and Virginia, Democrats prevailed, with Mikie Sherrill emerging victorious in New Jersey and Abigail Spanberger winning in Virginia, recapturing the governor’s mansion in that state after it had been Republican-controlled for the last four years. In addition, Democrat Zohran Mamdani, a frequent target of Trump’s ire in recent months, won the election for mayor in Trump’s original hometown of New York City.

While Trump had not endorsed the candidates in the Virginia race and had little involvement in the New Jersey one, He had directly endorsed Andrew Cuomo, the former New York governor, who was running as an independent candidate after losing the Democratic primary to Mamdani.

Beyond that, many of the electoral trends that delivered Trump back to the White House a year ago appeared to have reversed themselves, with many Democratic candidates around the country strongly outperforming Kamala Harris in 2024.

Trump was silent for the first several hours of the election, before making a post to Truth Social at 10:05 p.m. Eastern time:

“‘TRUMP WASN’T ON THE BALLOT, AND SHUTDOWN, WERE THE TWO REASONS THAT REPUBLICANS LOST ELECTIONS TONIGHT,’” according to Pollsters,” the post said. It’s not clear who those “pollsters” were. Still, it was clear that Trump, as he has done for most of his career and life, was blaming a bad result for him on everyone except himself.

A few minutes later, Trump cheered himself up by changing the subject and bragging about the ratings of his 60 Minutes interview.

“JUST OUT: The 60 Minutes interview of Donald J. Trump, on CBS, Sunday night, was the highest rated 60 Minutes IN YEARS!,” the president posed. Per the Hollywood Reporter, it does appear accurate that the show’s audience of 14 million was the largest  in “several years.”

At any rate, many analysts positioned the election results as a repudiation of Trump and his performance in office.
